Drive through the intersection of County Road 491 and County Road 486 on any weekday evening and you will sit through the light twice, maybe three times. That did not used to happen. A year ago this was a quiet corner with a Target and a car wash. Now it is the reason your errand list looks different than it did in 2025, and the site of a public discussion about sign requests.
Here is what has opened, what is still coming, and the county's vote on sign sizes.
Already Open This Year
If you have been keeping a mental tally, here is what has landed at Summit View at Corta Commons and the surrounding corner in 2026:
- Metro Diner opened its first Lecanto location on August 17 at 3351 W. Norvell Bryant Highway, a 3,710-square-foot restaurant seating 134 inside and 24 more on the patio. It is owned and run by Managing Partner Melissa Deskins, a 20-year restaurant veteran with degrees in culinary arts and baking and pastry. The diner started with breakfast and lunch hours, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a plan to stretch to 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. once dinner service is added.
- The Citrus County Chronicle reported that Sprouts Farmers Market opened at the same development in late May, joining the corner's growing grocery lineup.
- Florida Credit Union opened a new branch at 1586 County Road 491, just south of the Tidal Wave car wash.
That is three finished openings inside a single year, on a corner that already had a Target-anchored shopping center across the street.
The Corner Everyone's Betting On
Summit View at Corta Commons sits at the northwest corner of CR 491 and CR 486, directly across from the Shoppes at Black Diamond, where Target, Aldi, Texas Roadhouse, Starbucks and Panera Bread were already drawing traffic before this newer development broke ground. The Citrus County Chronicle reported in the fall of 2025 that CORTA Developments principal Cory Presnick had lined up commitments from LongHorn Steakhouse along with more than a dozen other tenants for the site: Sprouts Farmers Market, Planet Fitness, Ulta Beauty, Five Below, America's Best Eyeglasses and Contacts, Dollar Tree, Metro Diner, Bath and Body Works, Kay Jewelers, Heartland Dental, Mattress Warehouse and Chase Bank.
What is notable is not the length of that list. Plenty of Florida intersections get a long tenant roster announced and then wait years for half of it to materialize. What is different here is the pace. Sprouts Farmers Market and Metro Diner opened within twelve months of the announcement, and LongHorn Steakhouse, also on the announced roster, has since opened. Presnick has framed the roads connecting Summit View to the Shoppes at Black Diamond as one continuous shopping corridor, with CORTA holding additional land directly to the west for future phases.
Sign-Size Requests Before the County
The public discussion described here centered on signage rather than traffic capacity.
When LongHorn Steakhouse and Sprouts Farmers Market went before the county's Planning and Development Commission, both asked for permission to install signs larger than the standard size limit, matching the branding they use at other locations, including Sprouts' store in Ocala and LongHorn's restaurant in Brooksville. Commissioners voted 3-1 to deny the request. Both businesses opened anyway, with standard-size signs.
The sign vote is one part of the public record. The corner carries traffic averaging 41,600 vehicles per day at the signalized intersection of West Norvell Bryant Highway and North Lecanto Highway, the same hard corner shared with the Walmart, according to commercial listing data on the property. That count predates Metro Diner, Sprouts, LongHorn and the credit union branch. The public record described here includes the sign-size requests and vote, but does not describe a public discussion of turn lanes, signal timing or intersection capacity. Nearby residents may have questions about traffic as more of these tenants open.
What's Still Coming
The Citrus County Chronicle reported that BJ's Wholesale Club broke ground near the Shoppes at Black Diamond, with a tentative winter 2026 opening and a promise of 100 to 150 new jobs. The warehouse club will include its own gas station, joining the corner's existing Costco-versus-Sam's-Club-versus-BJ's conversation that Citrus County residents are about to be able to have firsthand. BJ's is not treating Lecanto as a one-off. The company's stated strategy is to open 25 to 30 new locations every two years nationally, and this store is one line item in that broader expansion, not a special bet on this specific corner.
Put together, that means the corner's growth is not slowing down after this year's wave of openings. It is stacking a second wave on top of the first, with a bulk grocery anchor and its own fuel station landing within a season or two of Metro Diner's first breakfast service.
The Forest Out Back Hasn't Changed
None of this touches the Withlacoochee State Forest, and that is worth saying plainly rather than as an afterthought. Lecanto sits minutes from the forest's roughly 48,000 acres of trails, used for biking, disc golf and hiking, along with the Crystal River Preserve just beyond it. None of that acreage has shown up in a single one of this year's retail announcements, and none of it costs anything to use.
That contrast is the real shape of what is happening in Lecanto right now. One corner of town is absorbing a year's worth of national chains, a sign-size vote and a coming warehouse club, all layered onto an intersection that was already carrying more than 40,000 cars a day before any of it arrived. A few minutes away, the forest is exactly as quiet and exactly as free as it was last year. Your errand run is changing. Your reset is not.
